For Annie                                                                           Per Annie

                                                                                                                                      (trad. di Tommaso Giglio)

Thank Heaven! the crisis –                                                                                        Grazie al cielo, la crisi

The danger is past,                                                                                                è passata. Il pericolo

And the lingering illness                                                                                             di un male troppo lungo

Is over at last –                                                                                                        è dileguato infine.

And the fever called “Living”                                                                                      La febbre detta “vivere”

Is conquered at last.                                                                                               finalmente è sconfitta.

Sadly, I know                                                                                                               Tristemente, lo so,

I am shorn of my strenght,                                                                                      io sono senza forze.

And no muscle I move                                                                                                Ogni muscolo è immobile

As I lie at full lenght –                                                                                              mentre giaccio disteso.

But no matter! – I feel                                                                                                 Ma non importa. In fondo

I am better at lenght.                                                                                               sento di stare meglio.

And I rest so composedly,                                                                                         Dolcemente riposo

Now, in my bed,                                                                                                      adesso sul mio letto.

That any beholder                                                                                                       Se qualcuno mi guarda

Might fancy me dead –                                                                                          mi può credere morto

Might start at beholding me,                                                                                      e tremare al pensiero

Thinking me dead.                                                                                                 ch’io non abbia più vita.

The moaning and groaning,                                                                                       Il gemito e il lamento,

The sighing and sobbing,                                                                                      il sospiro e il singhiozzo,

Are quieted now,                                                                                                         si sono ora calmati.

With that horrible throbbing                                                                                   Così tace l’orribile

At heart: – ah, that horrible,                                                                                        palpitare del cuore:

     Horrible throbbing!                                                                                                 palpitare terribile.

The sickness – the nausea –                                                                                     Il malore, la nausea,

The pitiless pain –                                                                                                  l’angoscioso dolore,

Have ceased, with the fever                                                                                      li ho veduti sparire

That maddened my brain –                                                                                   con la febbre del “vivere”

With the fever called “Living”                                                                                     che brucia nella mente

That burned in my brain.                                                                                        quasi a farla impazzire.

And oh! of all tortures                                                                                                 Di tutte le torture

That torture the worst                                                                                             questa, la più terribile,

Has abated – the terrible                                                                                           s’è calmata: l’orrenda

Torture of thirst                                                                                                        tortura della sete

For the napthaline river                                                                                              sopra il fiume inquinato

Of Passion accurst: –                                                                                            dall’insana Passione.

I have drunk of a water                                                                                               Ora ho bevuto un’acqua

That quenches all thirst: –                                                                                      che mi ha tolto ogni sete.

Of a water that flows,                                                                                                  E’ un acqua che fluisce

With a lullaby sound,                                                                                              come un suono di nenia

From a spring but a very few                                                                                     da una sorgente un poco

Feet under ground –                                                                                              nascosta sottoterra

From a cavern not very far                                                                                         in una grotta appena

     Down under ground.                                                                                               scavata sottoterra.

And ah! let it never                                                                                                      Ecco: nessuno mai

     Be foolishly said                                                                                                     stupidamente dica

That my room it is gloomy                                                                                          che la mia stanza è tetra

And narrow my bed;                                                                                               ed il mio letto angusto.

For man never slept                                                                                                    Nessuno ha mai dormito

In a different bed –                                                                                                 in un letto diverso.

And, to sleep, you must slumber                                                                               Per dormire vi occorre

In just such a bed.                                                                                                   un letto come questo.

My tantalized spirit                                                                                                      Il mio spirito inquieto

     Here blandly reposes,                                                                                            dolcemente riposa

Forgetting, or never                                                                                                    dimentico. E neppure

Regretting its roses –                                                                                            rimpiange le sue rose,

Its old agitations                                                                                                          gli antichi turbamenti

Of myrtles and roses:                                                                                             dei mirti e delle rose:

For now, while so quietly                                                                                            perché, mentre tranquillo

Lying, it fancies                                                                                                       ora giace, già immagina

A holier odor                                                                                                                un più sacro profumo

About it, of pansies –                                                                                             di viole del pensiero,

A rosemary odor,                                                                                                        di rosmarino e ruta

Commingled with pansies –                                                                                 intrecciata alle timide

With rue and the beautiful                                                                                          viole del pensiero.

     Puritan pansies.

And so it lies happily,                                                                                                 Così giace felice

Bathing in many                                                                                                      e s’immerge perduto

A dream of the truth                                                                                                    nel sogno della grazia

And the beauty of Annie –                                                                                     e dell’amore di Annie.

Drowned in a bath                                                                                                      Immerso è nelle trecce

Of the tresses of Annie.                                                                                         di Annie come in un bagno.

She tenderly kissed me,                                                                                            Lei tenera mi strinse

     She fondly caressed,                                                                                             nell’abbraccio d’amore

And then I fell gently                                                                                                    e dolcemente io caddi

To sleep on her breast –                                                                                       in sonno sul suo seno:

Deeply to sleep                                                                                                           in un sonno profondo

From the heaven of her breast.                                                                             nel cielo del suo seno.

When the light was extinguished,                                                                              Poi la luce si spense

She covered me warm,                                                                                         e lei mi coprì calda

As she prayed to the angels                                                                                      mentre pregava gli angeli

To keep me from harm –                                                                                       d’allontanare il male.

To the queen of the angels                                                                                         La regina degli angeli

To shield me from harm.                                                                                        li pregò di proteggermi.

And I lie so composedly,                                                                                            Io ora nel mio letto

Now, in my bed,                                                                                                      giaccio così composto

(Knowing her love)                                                                                                      (ormai so ch’ella m’ama)

That you fancy me dead –                                                                                     che mi si crede morto.

And I rest so contentedly,                                                                                           Io ora nel mio letto

Now in my bed,                                                                                                       giaccio così felice

(With her love at my breast)                                                                                       (col suo amore al mio petto)

That you fancy me dead –                                                                                     che mi si crede morto.

That you shudder to look at me,                                                                                Tremanti mi guardate

Thinking me dead: –                                                                                              voi credendomi morto.

But my heart it is brighter                                                                                           Ma il mio cuore risplende

Than all of the many                                                                                               più di tutte le innumeri

Stars in the sky,                                                                                                           stelle accese nel cielo,

For it sparkles with Annie –                                                                                   perché splende con Annie

It glows with the light                                                                                                   ed arde nella luce

Of the love of my Annie –                                                                                       dell’amore di Annie

With the thought of the light                                                                                        e ripensa alla luce

Of the eyes of my Annie.                                                                                        ch’è negli occhi di Annie.
