Ulalume - A Ballad                                                       Ulalume

(trad. di Gabriele Baldini)

The skies they were ashen and sober;                                                         Erano i cieli come fredda cenere,

The leaves they were crisped and sere –                                                eran le foglie accartocciate e secche,

The leaves they were withering and sere:                                                eran le foglie vizze e inaridite,

It was night, in the lonesome October                                                           era la notte, in quel solingo ottobre

Of my most immemorial year:                                                                   dell’anno che più duole al mio ricordo,

It was hard by the dim lake of Auber,                                                            era la notte dello stagno d’Auber,

In the misty mid region of Weir: –                                                             nei brumosi recessi della fosca

It was down by the dank tarn of Auber,                                                         palude Weir, ai limiti del bosco

In the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir.                                                   ove han sede i vampiri tormentosi.

Here once, through an alley Titanic,                                                              Quivi, una volta, un viale interminato

Of cypress, I roamed with my Soul –                                                        di cipressi io vagavo ed ero solo

Of cypress, with Psyche, my Soul.                                                            ed unica compagna avevo Psiche,

These were days when my heart was volcanic                                            Psiche, l’anima mia, sott’ai cipressi.

As the scoriac rivers that roll –                                                                  Erano i giorni che il mio cuor volgeva

As the lavas that restlessly roll                                                                  come i fuomi di scorie rotolanti,

Their sulphurous currents down Yaanek,                                                      come lava flottante senza posa

In the ultimate climes of the Pole –                                                           in sulfuree correnti giù per l’Yaanek,

That groan as they roll down Mount Yaanek,                                                nelle tetre contrade al polo estreme,

In the realms of the Boreal Pole.                                                               le correnti gementi giù per l’Yaanek,

                                                                                                                          nelle regioni al polo boreale.

Our talk had been serious and sober,                                                          Grave il nostro colloquio ed in tristezza,

But our thoughts they were palsied and sere –                                       ed i nostri pensieri trepidi e mesti,

Our memories were treacherous and sere;                                             le rimembranze infide e sconsolate…

For we knew not the month was October,                                                    Ahimè, della stagione fummo ignari,

And we marked not the night of the year –                                              della morta stagione e della notte

(Ah, night of all nights in the year!)                                                            dell’anno, la più negra delle notti!

We noted not the dim lake of Auber,                                                            Non conoscemmo il fosco lago d’Auber

(Though once we had journeyed down here)                                           (eppur le rive un giorno abbiam toccate!)

We remembered not the dank tarn of Auber,                                              non quell’umido stagno, non il bosco

Nor the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir.                                                ove han sede i vampiri tormentosi.

And now, as the night was senescent,                                                          Così, appena la notte fu men fonda

And star-dials pointed to morn –                                                              e il quadrante di stelle annunciò il giorno,

As the star-dials hinted of morn –                                                             non appena il quadrante annunciò il giorno,

At the end of our path a liquescent                                                                in fondo al viale, un fumido lucore

And nebulous lustre was born,                                                                  indistinto s’accese e liquescente,

Out of which a miraculous crescent                                                              e dur d’esso il miracolo si tolse

Arose with a duplicate horn –                                                                    d’un bicorne, raggiante arco di luce,

Astarte’s bediamonded crescent,                                                                 sorse il candore d’una mezzaluna,

Distinct with its duplicate horn.                                                                  la costellata di diamanti, Astarte,

dal nitente, bicorne arco di luce.

And I said - « She is warmer than Dian;                                                       Dissi allora: « Più calda essa è di Diana,

She rolls through an ether of sighs –                                                        e rotola per entro un puro etere

She revels in a region of sighs.                                                                 di sospiranti spiriti, radiosa;

She has seen that the tears are not dry on                                                   sa che le lagrime ancor non sono asciutte

These cheeks where the worm never dies,                                             su queste guance ove non muore il verme,

And has come past the stars of the Lion,                                                     e attraverso la tana del Leone,

To point us the path to the skies –                                                            viene, per additare a noi il sentiero

To the Lethean peace of the skies –                                                        ai cieli, alla letèa pace dei cieli.

Come up, in despite of the Lion,                                                                   Viene a brillar su noi coi suoi lucenti

To shine on us with her bright eyes –                                                       occhi, a dispetto del Leone, viene

Come up, through the lair of the Lion,                                                           attraverso la tana del Leone,

With love in her luminous eyes ».                                                              amorosa negli occhi folgoranti ».

But Psyche, uplifting her finger,                                                                     Ma Psiche, in quella, alto levando un dito,

Said - « Sadly this star I mistrust –                                                           tristemente parlò: « Di quella stella,

Her pallor I strangely mistrust –                                                                 del suo strano pallor non ti fidare,

Ah, hasten! – ah, let us not linger!                                                                 fuggi senz’altro indugio! ».

Ah, fly! – let us fly! – for we must ».                                                           Atterrita parlava e lasciò pendere

In terror she spoke; letting sink her                                                               le sue ali a strisciare nella polvere,

Wings till they trailed in the dust –                                                             non curando le piume che strisciavano

In agony sobbed; letting sink her                                                                   nella polvere, dolorosamente

Plumes till they trailed in the dust –                                                           si trascinavan nella fredda polvere.

Till they sorrowfully trailed in the dust.

I replied « This is nothing but dreaming.                                                       Risposi allora: « Questo è solo un sogno!

Let us on, by this tremulous light!                                                              Procediamo in quel chiarore tremulo,

Let us bathe in this crystalline light!                                                          e anneghiamoci in quella vitrea luce!

Its Sybillic splendor is beaming                                                                     Raggian stanotte, in strana luce avvinte,

With Hope and in Beauty to-night –                                                          e Speranza e Bellezza. Guarda! Ascende

See! – it flickers up the sky through the night!                                         attraverso alla notte fino al cielo!

Ah, we safely may trust to its gleaming                                                         Possiamo confidar nella sua luce,

And be sure it will lead us aright –                                                            il suo fulgore a noi sarà sicuro

We surely may trust to a gleaming                                                                corteggio fino alla celeste sfera,

That cannot but guide us aright                                                                 mentr’esso ascende tremulo, brillando

Since it flickers up to Heaven through the night ».                                       attraverso il firmamento, nella notte! ».

Thus I pacified Psyche and kissed her,                                                        Così ho placata Psiche e l’ho baciata

And tempted her out of her gloom –                                                         e ho tentato di toglierla ai pensieri

And conquered her scruples and gloom;                                                 gravi e attediati della sua tristezza.

And we passed to the end of the vista –                                                      Guadagnammo, del viale, allora, il fondo

But were stopped by the door of a tomb –                                              ma ci arrestò la porta d’un sepolcro,

By the door of a legended tomb: –                                                           la porta d’un sepolcro e un epitafio.

And I said – « What is written, sweet sister,                                                « Dolce sorella » dissi « che sta scritto

On the door of this legended tomb? »                                                      sull’epitafio del sepolcro? » Ed ella:

She replied – « Ulalume – Ulalume! –                                                     « Ulalume » rispose. « Esso è il sepolcro

‘T is the vault of thy lost Ulalume! »                                                           d’Ulalume, la donna che hai perduta. »

Then my heart it grew ashen and sober                                                       Divenne il cuore mio di fredda cenere

As the leaves that were crisped and sere –                                            come le foglie accartocciate e secche,

As the leaves that withering and sere –                                                   come le foglie vizze e inaridite

And I cried – « It was surely October,                                                           e gridai: « Certamente era d’ottobre

On this very night of last year,                                                                   in questa stessa notte, allor ch’io venni

That I journeyed – I journeyed down here! –                                            l’anno trascorso a questo luogo, e in braccio,

That I brought a dread burden down here –                                             freddo, recavo un macabro fardello.

On this night, of all nights in the year,                                                       Ah! notte delle notti, allor ch’io venni,

Ah, what demon hath tempted me here?                                                 qual demone crudele qui m’ha tratto?

Well I know, now, this dim lake of Auber –                                                    Ben riconosco il tetro lago d’Auber,

This misti mid region of Weir: –                                                                la brumosa contrada e la foresta

Well I know, now, this dank tarn of Auber –                                                  di Weir, ben riconosco questo stagno

This ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir ».                                                  umido d’Auber, questo negro bosco

Ove han sede i vampiri tormentosi  ».
