The Haunted Palace                                                                    Il Palazzo Maledetto

(trad. di Elio Vittorini)

In the greenest of our valleys                                                                                                 Nella nostra più verde vallata

By good angels tenanted                                                                                                       abitata dagli angeli

Once a fair and stately palace –                                                                                           un palazzo grandioso, una volta,

Radiant palace – reared its head.                                                                                        innalzava la fronte raggiante;

In the monarch Thought’s dominion –                                                                                   nel dominio del re Pensiero,

It stood there!                                                                                                                          la sua fronte si ergeva laggiù!

Never seraph spread a pinion                                                                                              Mai spiegò, serafino, le ali

Over fabric half so fair!                                                                                                           su dimora splendente così.

Banners yellow, glorious, golden,                                                                                         Sulla cima, ondeggiavano al vento

On its roof did float and flow –                                                                                               vittoriose bandiere dorate

(This – all this – was in the olden                                                                                          (è lontan, tutto questo, nel tempo,

Time long ago)                                                                                                                        è lontano, di tanto tempo fa);

And every gentle air that dallied,                                                                                           in quei giorni felici d’allora

In that sweet day                                                                                                                     a ogni fragile fiato di vento

Along the ramparts plumed and pallid,                                                                                lungo i chiari bastioni, fra l’erba,

A winged odor went away.                                                                                                    passava un profumo leggero.

Wanderers in that happy valley,                                                                                            Il viandante, guardando il castello,

Through two luminous windows, saw                                                                                   due finestre  lucenti scorgeva;

Spirits moving musically,                                                                                                       e là dietro, movimenti armoniosi

To a lute’s well-tuned law,                                                                                                      di fantasmi obbedienti ad un liuto;

Round about a throne where, sitting,                                                                                    tutt’intorno ad un trono; seduto,

Porphyrogene,                                                                                                                        (porfirogenito!) il re,

In state his glory well befitting                                                                                                il signore di tutto il regno,

The ruler of the realm was seen.                                                                                           era, nella sua gloria, veduto.

And all with pearl and ruby glowing                                                                                      Scintillava di perle e rubini

Was the fair palace door,                                                                                                      la porta del bel palazzo

Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,                                                                    e ne usciva a torrenti, a torrenti

And sparkling evermore,                                                                                                       una folla smagliante di Echi;

A troop of Echoes whose sweet duty                                                                                   la cui dolce funzione era solo

Was but to sing,                                                                                                                      di cantare cantare cantare,

In voices of surpassing beauty,                                                                                             con le voci più belle del mondo,

The wit and wisdom of their king.                                                                                         la sapienza sottile del re…

But evil things, in robes of sorrow,                                                                                        Ma genii del male, vestiti a lutto,

Assailed the monarch’s high estate.                                                                                    assalirono la casa del monarca

(Ah, let us mourn! – for never morrow                                                                                  (ah piangiamo, piangiamo, ché mai

Shall dawn upon him, desolate!)                                                                                           l’indomani avrà alba per lui!),

And round about his home the glory                                                                                     sì che intorno alla casa, la gloria

That blushed and bloomed,                                                                                                   risplendente una volta di porpora

Is but a dim-remembered story                                                                                             si è mutata in oscura memoria

Of the old-time entombed.                                                                                                     degli anni travolti laggiù.

And travellers, now, within that valley,                                                                                   Chi percorre, ancora, la valle,

Through the encrimsoned windows see                                                                              dietro quelle vetrate rossastre

Vast forms that move fantastically                                                                                        scorge forme in un moto confuso,

To a discordant melody,                                                                                                        ode musiche senza ritmo;

While, like a ghastly rapid river,                                                                                            mentre esce una folla di mostri

Through the pale door                                                                                                            attraverso la porta oscura,

A hideous throng rush out forever                                                                                         come un fiume lugubre in piena; ride

And laugh – but smile no more.                                                                                            ma non sorride più.
